Can you have more than 1 PDB with Standard Edition 2 (SE2)?

When we announced the 3-PDB-Support with Oracle Database 19c onward at OpenWorld 2019, I was very excited. According to the license documentation, this applies to Standard Edition 2 (SE2) as well. But does it work? Can you have more than 1 PDB with Standard Edition 2 (SE2)?

The license documentation is pretty clear about 3 user-created PDBs:

Check with Oracle Database 19.5.0 SE2

It’s been a while since I installed SE2 instead of EE. But everything goes smoothly. You just need to select “Standard Edition 2” in the OUI. The image you …

Great License News: Spatial and Graph, Machine Learning

Just this week in Brighton at TechFest19 by UKOUG I’ve heard one of the common complaints about our license strategy. Something I can’t comment in my position. But even better that we are announcing some very good news now. Oracle is listening. It is a reaction to customer’s wishes.

Transportable Tablespaces – Does it work between SE2 and EE?

Transportable Tablespaces - Does it work between SE2 and EE?I thought I had blogged about this topic already. But it seems to be that I stored this information somewhere else. Randomly I receive this question: Oracle Transportable Tablespaces – Does it work between SE2 and EE?

In addition often the question gets precised: Does it work in both directions or just one-way?

Can you simply switch from SE2 to EE with Oracle Multitenant

Oracle MultitenantThis question is coming up from time to time – and currently not covered in the official Oracle documentation as far as I know: “Can you simply switch from SE2 to EE with Oracle Multitenant?”

Yes, you can!

First of all, the switch is possible and tested. But you’ll have to satisfy a few requirements:

  • Both database versions must be the same
  • Both databases must have the same character set (in Oracle Database 12.1)

That’s it. Simply unplug your Standard Edition 2 PDB and plug it into your Enterprise Edition CDB.

In addition you may have to run several component …

Can you apply Bundle Patches to SE2 databases?

Can you apply Bundle Patches (BP) to Standard Edition (SE2) databases?

This question got raised by Adam (thanks!) via the comments section of the blog. But a few days later I read it on the internal mailing lists as well. Adam was referring to this sentence in the BP READMEs since October 2015:

“In this document Oracle Database Home refers to Enterprise Edition. Standard Edition Database software installs should install Database PSU.”

Why was this sentence added?

There were issues with enabling functionality on SE2 databases by accident with a Proactive Bundle Patch – something which got fixed and …

Adaptive Execution Plans – not available in Oracle SE2

I received an interesting question on the blog the other day:

“Are Adaptive Plans an Enterprise Edition only feature?”

What does the License Guide say?

The Oracle Database 12.2 License Guide says:

Adaptive - EE only

Adaptive Features: Enterprise Edition only – from the Oracle 12.2 License Guide

What does www.oracle.com say?

This is the link the customer came across – also saying that Adaptive Execution Plans are an Enterprise Edition only feature:

Adaptive Plans - EE only

Adaptive Execution Plans – Enterprise Edition only – from www.oracle.com

What does this mean for SE2?

That is the question Adam had. Does this impact SE2? Will I get an error …
