Simple database installation with applyRU and applyOneOffs

Some of you may remember my blog post from April 22, 2021 about issues I saw with the unattended installation using applyRU and applyOneOffs switches. The installation failed with a strange jox error when I passed on the OJVM bundle to my installation queue. But there is relief – finally, after almost one year. So let me give you some background, and of course show you the workaround for the Simple database installation with applyRU and applyOneOffs.

Install and Patch in one single action with OUI

This is such a common case: You want to install a new Oracle Home and you’d like to apply the most recent patch bundle to it as well. But as we don’t officially offer Gold Images to download where the RU is included already, you have to do three tasks instead of one. But you can avoid this and Install and Patch in one single action with OUI.

Recommendation and 3 standard actions

We always recommend that you apply the most recent RU. Hence, usually you will download Oracle Database 19.3.0 from …

Patching all my environments with the July 2020 Patch Bundles

Quarterly routine: When the new security alert get published, then it is patching time again. I’ll show you as usual how Patching all my environments with the July 2020 Patch Bundles works. And just an important annotation upfront: I patch in-place due to space issues. But in reality, you please patch always out-of-place with a separate home.

Oracle 18.4.0 installation on AIX may fail with ORA-40238

Oracle 18.4.0 for IBM AIX is available since mid November 2018. But I’ve received several emails from people saying that Oracle 18.4.0 installation on AIX may fail with ORA-40238. And it’s true, this can happen. But there’s a simple workaround which unfortunately is not in the documentation yet. We’ll take care that it will be added soon.

Oracle 18.4.0 installation on AIX may fail with ORA-40238

Install components in Multitenant ALWAYS with catcon.pl

I did blog several times about how to remove an unwanted component from a database. But yesterday I came across this interesting scenario worth a blog post.

How to install a component afterwards in Single-/Multitenant?

I haven’t checked all the MOS Notes but I recognized that some MOS Notes explaining how to (re-)create a component such as JVM are not updated to deal with a Single and/or Multitenant environment as they simply call the scripts from SQL*Plus. But the key to script execution in such an environment is catcon.pl, the perl driver meant to execute database scripts not only in …
