Oracle Fail Safe is deprecated with Oracle Database 19c

I wanted to put this on the blog for quite a while but forgot to do so. Since Oracle Database 19c, Oracle Fail Safe has been deprecated. What does this mean?

First of all, deprecated does not mean desupported. Oracle Fail Safe is still fully supported. But since Oracle 19c, you will find this note in the Windows Admin Guide:

While I was writing the blog post about Creating CDBs and non-CDBs with less options I realized that Oracle Multimedia is deprecated in Oracle 18c – but I haven’t mentioned this here yet.

Oracle Multimedia was called Oracle Intermedia a long time ago when we introduced it back in the Oracle 8i days.

Non-CDB architecture still exists in Oracle Database 12.2.

I received a question whether the Non-CDB architecture still exists in Oracle Database 12.2.from 3 different colleagues in the past week:

“Does Oracle Database 12.2 still allow us to create non-CDB databases?”

And as I get this question at every customer-facing workshop these days as well before being able to talk about Single/Multitenant – I think it is important to clarify it. The statement is misleading. And I can’t blame anybody about misreading it.

What does DEPRECATED mean? And DESUPPORTED?

There’s sometimes a misunderstanding about what we mean with the term DEPRECATED? And what is the difference to DESUPPORTED? Actually there’s a full chapter in the Database Upgrade Guide listing deprecated and desupported features.

Especially this message puzzled a lot of customers stating that the non-CDB architecture is deprecated in Oracle Database 12c.

In the Database Upgrade Guide we clearly explain what deprecated means:
