Grid Infrastructure: Bye Tomcat – welcome Micronaut

Anil Nair wrote it in his MAA Blog Post on April 28: “Oracle is simplifying the software stack by replacing Apache Tomcat application server with Micronaut framework.”. And since some of you asked already, let me give you a bit more information about this change in 19.30 and 19.31 with Grid Infrastructure: Bye Tomcat – welcome Micronaut.

Does AutoUpgrade support the MOVE option?

Sometimes you have different plans for the day. Or, in my case, the day just needs a few extra hours. Today, I received a very interesting question on the blog at first by a customer I know very well. Then we exchanged mails – and I was caught forgetting what I wrote on the blog a longer while ago. The core question is: Does AutoUpgrade support the MOVE option? But there was much more to discuss and figure out as you can read below.

Oracle AI Database 26ai replaces Oracle Database 23ai

What did Larry Ellison announce?

Larry gave a spoiler already in the Q1 earnings call where he referred to Oracle AI Database instead of Oracle Database. He was clearly emphasizing the AI capabilities of our flagship product. From now on, it will be known as Oracle AI Database…

AutoUpgrade migration to Oracle 23ai Exascale with Refreshable Clones

Those of you who have been to our workshops in the past 3 years know that we promote one feature as the ultimate killer feature for moving to Oracle Database 19c and 23ai: Refreshable Clones. These work not only from PDB to PDB, but magically also with a non-CDB. And our teams works with a good number of customers using exactly this technique to Oracle 23ai. Now, we talked about it. And we blogged about it (see below). But there is a brand-new MOS note out there showcasing an AutoUpgrade migration to Oracle 23ai Exascale with Refreshable Clones.

People do super-cool stuff … AutoUpgrade Composer

I am jealous, and so happy. There are so happy about the fact that we have such skilled minds in the industry. One of them is Marcus Vinicius, an Oracle ACE Pro from Brazil who lives in Dallas, TX in the US. And besides being a real wizard he is also a super-nice guy. No idea where all these Brazilian Oracle experts “grow” but I am very proud to have two of the best in the world in our team. But back to Marcus. People do super-cool stuff … AutoUpgrade Composer is something Marcus put out in the wild.

Utrecht in Spring is beautiful – and we’ll be there on May 6

No worries, I don’t start writing a travel blog. Or, maybe one day I will. But not for now. Daniel and I will be on the road again next week for a full day workshop in Utrecht on May 6 and in Brussels on May 7. Brussels is sold out already, the registration is closed. But in Utrecht we still have a few seats open due to the superb conference auditorium space in the Oracle office. Clearly, Utrecht in Spring is beautiful – and we’ll be there on May 6. And it is very close to Brussels in …

New interesting underscores for more than 255 _FIX_CONTROLs

I keep saying this – we have the best and most skilled customers. Christian Klose from my Franconian home region contacted me via LinkedIn and asked for some assistance with an SR. I confess, I replied way too late (information overflow). But the finding Christian had is great to know. There are new interesting underscores for more than 255 _FIX_CONTROLs.

Why don’t you see them in ORAdiff?

As usual, I went to ORAdiff and tried to find out anything about these new _fix_control parameters. But I couldn’t find any indication for what Christian …

How do find new features in Oracle Release Updates (RUs)?

I know, not everybody is a huge fan of new features in RUs. But how do find new features in Oracle Release Updates (RUs)? Are the listed anywhere? They are, no worries. At least since Oracle Database 19c.

New Features in RUs?

I can already sense that some of you will be tempted to comment and tell me that you don’t like any new features in Oracle Database Release Updates, in short: RUs. But on the other hand there is also something good with it. Rather than waiting for the next full database release …

Data Pump Bundle Patch for Oracle Database 23ai

How long can I request a backport for Oracle Database RUs?

Especially in relation to the recently announced extension of the Oracle Database 19c Premier and Extended Support periods it may be useful if you are aware of this policy since you may ask yourself: How long can I request a backport for Oracle Database RUs?

What is a backport?

Looking for support dates for Oracle Middleware, GoldenGate, JDK and more?

Well, after a few wild travel days, this morning I received an email from my ex-VP in my presales days, Günther Stürner, asking whether I have a matrix for Oracle GoldenGate support time frames as we share them about the database in all our slide decks. And I confess, I had no such overview.

Later the day, Günther updated me – he found it and shared it with me, too (thank you!!).

And since the blog acts as sort of my brain dump, and since I never would have guessed that the OGG dates are kept in …
