Larry Ellison announced Oracle AI Database 26ai today in his keynote at Oracle AI World conference in Las Vegas. And I am pretty certain you may want some clarification on what this means exactly. Therefore, let me clarify the details, and why Oracle AI Database 26ai replaces Oracle Database 23ai.

What did Larry Ellison announce?
Larry gave a spoiler already in the Q1 earnings call where he referred to Oracle AI Database instead of Oracle Database. He was clearly emphasizing the AI capabilities of our flagship product. From now on, it will be known as Oracle AI Database. This will apply to other key products as well, for instance Oracle Autonomous AI Database. But not all products will see a new name. Oracle Database Vault stays the same for instance as do tools such as SQL*Plus.
But the much bigger announcement is the replacement of Oracle Database 23ai with Oracle AI Database 26ai. I can foresee some eyebrows being raised about this. This replacement occurred because our engineering teams have added so many new AI innovations across AI Vector Search, Agentic AI, AI management, AI Data Development, AI Analytics, and AI App Development on top of Oracle Database 23ai.
Since I am publishing this blog post shortly after Larry’s keynote at Oracle AI World 2025, I will link the recording for your convenience later.
Oracle AI Database 26ai is available now on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure on Oracle Cloud, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud and AWS. It is also available now on-premises on engineered systems such as Oracle Exadata and Oracle Database Appliance, and in Oracle Database Free for developers. While the date for Oracle AI Database 26ai on other platforms has not been announced, we will update My Oracle Support (MOS) Doc ID: 742060.1 when it is announced.
Is this a new release?
Yes, this is a new release. However, unlike previous releases this release simply adds new AI functionality on top of Oracle Database 23ai without changing the internal architecture or modifying existing APIs. Therefore, there is no need for a complex database upgrade or re-certification of apps. The core database architecture remains the same as 23ai, and the release numbering reflects this (see below).
Also, the Lifetime Support Policy for Oracle Database 23ai applies to Oracle AI Database 26ai as well. As we announced last year, Oracle Database 23ai is a Long Term Support release – and this automatically applies to Oracle AI Database 26ai as well since it replaces Oracle Database 23ai.
Do you need to upgrade, or will you patch?
Certainly, this is the next question you’ll have, especially those of you who are already live on Oracle Database 23ai. Because Oracle AI Database 26ai simply adds additional functionality on top of Oracle Database 23ai, this is the simplest update in Oracle history. If your database is already running 23ai, you can simply apply the October 2025 quarterly Release Update (RU) that has version number 23.26.0 – there is no upgrade or application recertification needed. You can use your preferred quarterly update tool and even apply this update in a rolling fashion if you are running Real Application Clusters, just like other quarterly Release Updates.
The update process is the following:
- Oracle Database 19c ==> Upgrade to Oracle AI Database 26ai
- Oracle Database 21c ==> Upgrade to Oracle AI Database 26ai
- Oracle Database 23ai ==> Apply the October RU to get to Oracle AI Database 26ai
If you are on 19c or 21c, you can upgrade directly to 26ai – there is no need to upgrade to 23ai first.
If you are running on 23ai on Oracle’s Autonomous Database there is nothing for you to do! Your 23ai Autonomous Databases will be automatically updated to 26ai Autonomous AI Databases.
If you want more details or want to see how this works, come to our talks at Oracle AI World this week.

Will the release numbering change?
Yes, it will. As part of the Oracle AI Database release, we are changing the release numbering scheme for Oracle Database to make it much simpler to understand.
The first number of the release stays the same since Oracle AI Database 26ai simply replaces Oracle Database 23ai – it remains “23”.
The second number of the release indicates the year of the release update, e.g. 26 for 2026.
And the third number marks the quarter of the release update, e.g. 1,2,3 or 4.
You will now be able to determine the date of a Release Update by just looking at the first three numbers of the version! These are the numbers that everyone looks at.
Here are a few examples of the release numbering:
- April 2025: Oracle Database 23ai – 23.8.0.25.04
- July 2025: Oracle Database 23ai – 23.9.0.25.07
- October 2025: Oracle AI Database 26ai – 23.26.0.0.0
- January 2026: Oracle AI Database 26ai – 23.26.1.0.0
- April 2026: Oracle AI Database 26ai – 23.26.2.0.0
Well, I know, you may ask yourself what the zero in 23.26.0 means. Obviously, there is no zero quarter in a year. But we wanted to cut over to the new numbering scheme now late in 2025 to launch it at Oracle AI World. Hence, it got the unusual “0” for the quarter before 2026.
I know, this is quite a change in some ways.

But I am certain you won’t look back in a short while. In addition, we comply more closely with the naming conventions in the cloud.

Will there be a 23ai on prem at all or maybe 26ai is the next on prem release?
Maybe bigger question is, will there be a on prem at all or do we need to start looking elsewhere…?
Hi Mika,
26ai replaces 23ai – but I can’t make any statement about general on-prem availability unfortunately.
Thanks,
Mike
The one and only question since the release of 23.
Seems Oracle wants to force you to user their cloud, or at least their exdata or on premise cloud, again managed by oracle …
But regarding the fact that 19c has extended support until the end od 2032, for now^^
One year longer than 23ai premier support. I really dont get the complete idea behind this. Maybe inspired by Donald? 😉
Hi Michael,
actually the Premier Support for 19c end earlier than the one for 23ai/26ai. The reason why we haven’t announced Extended Support for 23ai/26ai is the fact that it isn’t available on prem yet.
Thanks
Mike
This will be great – IF and WHEN it is available to install on-premise. They’ve been promising 23ai since back when it was called 23c… Hopefully it’ll be available before support runs out for 19c?
Hi Benoit,
one thing I can assure is that we won’t run out 19c support having no on-prem 26ai release available before.
Cheers
Mike
So you assure us, that there will be an on prem version of Oracle 26 AI Database? And on prem means, not only for engineered systems but also for “normal” server hardware with Linux x86-64 for example?
In other words, Oracle will not cut off “normal” server from modern Oracle Database releases?
Hi Jörg,
I am not in the position of assuring anything since this is not in my hands. I ask you to reach out to your local Oracle contact and express your concerns.
Plus, MOS 742060.1 is supposed to get updated at some point when news are available.
Thanks,
Mike
I still see 23.10 in the v$version and v$instance banners for the autonomous database. Is that right ?
Hi Hemant,
that’s a good hint – let me investigate.
Are you connecting to an AlwaysFree or to a paid ADB? Is it ADB-Serverless, or ADB Dedicated?
Cheers,
Mike
It is an “Always Free” ADB.
The Cloud Console shows that it is 26ai. But querying v$instance and v$version show 23.10 (instead of the expected 23.26)
Thanks – I will check this internally now but others commented similarly.
Cheers,
Mike
I now see that both v$instance and v$version show 23.26 in my Free PDB and the banner is now ‘Oracle AI Database 26ai Enterprise Edition Release 23.26.0.1.0 – for Oracle Cloud and Engineered Systems””
(I am not sure when it got updated)
Thanks – it has been update a day before I think.
Thanks,
Mike
If you’re new to including AI in the product name, why do you need to include it in the version number? “Oracle AI Database 26” would have been sufficient.
And this is the first time that the internal Oracle version number is different from the product. Oracle 26ai results in 23.26.0.0.0. It doesn’t make sense. It just looks like a tinkering, doesn’t seem to have been fully thought out, more like marketing.
Hello Martin,
it is new and very unusual, I fully agree.
The naming went through many cycles, and at some point a decision gets taken.
Thanks,
Mike
https://mikedietrichde.com/2025/10/14/oracle-ai-database-26ai-replaces-oracle-database-23ai/
Was that in Q&A? The live stream suddenly ended.
Hi Oliver,
I’d guess so.
Cheers,
Mike
Hi Mike, could you please explain why the version number is 23.26.1 if the release is 26ai? Why does it start with 23? In 2027, will it be version 27ai?
Thanks.
Hi Marian,
the core is still the 23 code base. Technically, 23.26 is an RU on top of previous 23ai RUs. Since it is a gold image anyway, you may not care. But this is the reason why the “23” stays in the first number. And I can’t tell if it will become Oracle AI Database 27ai in a year or so. But if the code base then is still 23, it will be then 23.27.1.0.0 when you query the version.
Thanks,
Mike
Hi Mike,
your first link (https://blogs.oracle.com/database/post/oracle-ai-database-26ai-now-available) just returns “We can’t find the page you were looking for.”
Thanks – let me correct this. I used the proposed link for the post, it may have been adjusted then.
Mike
yebrows raised … sqlplus -v… Version 23.26.0.0.0
Is ru 23.10 going to be renamed 23.26.1 ? just guessing 🙂
Instead of going from RU 23.9.0 to 23.10.0 we are going from 23.9.0 to 23.26.0.
The change in the release numbering then will start to become visible in a few months when we will release the January 2026 RU. It will have then have the quarter of the release in the third number, i.e. 23.26.1.0.
Thanks
Mike
LOL
Hi Mike,
Amazing article – thanks ! So if the next “true” long-term 28ai ever comes out (not like 26 which is a replacement to pump up the AI features), then numbering wise it will naturally be called 28.x, BUT … the 2nd digit “x” will have to be left as blank until a similar situation happens down the road 🙂
thanks
Navin
Thanks Navin – and I really don’t know which one will the coming Long Term Support release after 23ai/26ai.
Let’s see 🙂
Thanks for your comment!
Cheers,
Mike
Will this feature is applicable for 19c ADW running on the dedicated cluster on X11. Since currently it’s not supported for 19c to 23ai itself
Hi,
19c ADW will change to Oracle Autonomous AI Lakehouse 26ai. And I think there will be an upgrade path in the tooling.
Cheers,
Mike
Hey Mike,
We’re running both Paid ADB-S and Always Free (assuming ADB-S as well) and for both I get the same result from my SQL below. I’m seeing version 23.10.0.25.10, but was expecting 23.10.0.0.0 per your comments above. Could you clarify the difference?
Thanks!
Jack

I see the same – I just learned that the patch number for ADB-S was built before the change got implemented. The next patch should flip it to 23.26 then.
Cheers,
Mike
Thanks Mike for the clarification, much appreciated.
This reminds me of that “Pimp My Ride” meme.
Yo dawg! I heard you like AI,
So we put more AI in your 26ai – now it’s Oracle AI Database 26ai!
😉
Thanks,
Mike
What a joke. Oracle makes itself more and more unreliable by postponing on-premise release several times. Just creating a new version number does not make things better
Hi Mike,
will there be a requirement in the future to run Oracle Datenbase on AI accelerated Hardware to support all the new AI features?
Thanks
Hi Richard,
no, there won’t such a requirement. But of course, vector operations and LLMs run faster on GPUs.
Cheers,
Mike
Hi Mike,
Like many customers, we have been waiting for version 23ai for two years for our on-premise infrastructures. Today, there is still no visibility, no release date, just a renaming to 26ai. How can we work with Oracle, organize, and budget our projects and developments?
This total lack of visibility is becoming very problematic (even shameful).
Hi Franck,
I fully see all your points – and I also see the impact here.
Please reach out to your Oracle contact (even in sales or in CSS). That is the best you could do.
Thanks,
Mike
Hi Mike,
Thanks for the article and the answers in the comments. Can we expect that GoldenGate and CloudControl will be renamed to 26ai as well?
Nariman
Hi Nariman,
I think OEM CC will stay with its name – but OGG will be renamed as far as I know.
Cheers,
Mike
Hi Mike,
Thanks for the article, always helpful. Appreciate your commitment to the community.
Just wanted to make sure I am getting this right. I have a 23.9 on Exadata.
SQL*Plus: Release 23.0.0.0.0 – for Oracle Cloud and Engineered Systems on Tue Nov 18 16:49:26 2025
Version 23.9.0.25.07
Copyright (c) 1982, 2025, Oracle. All rights reserved.
Connected to:
Oracle Database 23ai Enterprise Edition Release 23.0.0.0.0 – for Oracle Cloud and Engineered Systems
Version 23.9.0.25.07
Now I am trying to get this Oct Ru now. Previously I have done the following.
1. Unzip the gold image p38411960_230000_Linux-x86-64.zip
2. From that folder run the runInstaller:
time ./runInstaller -silent -setupDBHome -OSDBA dba -OSBACKUPDBA dba -OSDGDBA dba -OSKMDBA dba -OSRACDBA dba -ORACLE_BASE /u01/app/oracle -OSOPER dba -clusterNodes dev01,dev02 -installEdition EE -INVENTORY_LOCATION /u01/app/oraInventory
4. Reconfig the DB if the home is moved to a different location using srvctl
3. Run datapatch.
I looked at Gold Image How To (Doc ID 2965269.1), it only talks about the GI gold image and doesnt mention the DB gold image.
I looked at the readme for the Gold Image, it doenst give me the option of running runInstaller:
https://updates.oracle.com/Orion/Services/download?type=readme&aru=27970243
So, I just want to make sure if runinstaller precodure I pasted above will still work.
thanks,
Anil
Hi Anil,
can you please double-check whether the Gold Image is available by now?
Thanks
Mike
I am planning on upgrading my 19c ExaCC to 23, but my concern is, will the 23.26 be ready for production immediately ? (23.26 had probably lots of new features added and I am expecting bugs etc..)
Or I should stick with 23.9 for now ?
But the issue, probably 23.9 does not get additional RU-s any more and the next RU for that is indeed the 23.26 ?
Or what is you suggestion, if I am starting to test my database upgrades from 19.29 RU ?
Hi Raul,
actually 23.26 is just an RU – so the sequence is … 23.8.0 ==> 23.9.0 ==> 23.26.0 ==> 23.26.1 (in Jan 2026) ==> 23.26.2 (in Apr 2026) etc
We have a good number of customers live on 23ai who will go to 26ai soon, some of them we discussed publicly at Oracle AI World in October 2025.
Cheers,
Mike
Larry must have been stoned there. What happens when 2027 comes?
You may ask him personally, but when you refer to the release numbering, it will be:
23.27.1
23.27.2
23.27.3
23.27.4
for January, April, July and October RUs in 2027.
Cheers,
Mike
So for 23.27.1
It will be 27ai then ?
Raul
Time will tell … 🙂
Mike
Dear Mike,
Oracle 26ai is still NOT available as AWS RDS. Is this a problem of AWS ?
Kind Regards
Eberhard
Hi Eberhard,
I guess this has to do with the unavailability of Standard Edition right now. But there should be news soon as far as I heard.
Cheers,
Mike
