Your UPGRADE and MIGRATION program at OCW23

Are you coming to Oracle Cloud World 2023 and to Oracle DatabaseWorld at CloudWorld? Then you should read on since this may be your upgrade and migration program at OCW23. We are desperately looking forward to see and meet you in 2 weeks in Las Vegas. Don’t forget to add the talks you’d like to visit to your schedule as some of the rooms have limited capacity. And at least one of our labs is already sold out.

https://www.oracle.com/database/upgrades/#rc30p2

Who’s speaking and HOL’ing?

Speakers and your lab hosts will be:

  • Roy Swonger
  • Mike Dietrich
  • Daniel Overby Hansen
  • Rodrigo Jorge
  • Bill Beauregard

And to make our talks more “real”, we did ask customers and experts to come on stage with us. Each of them will carry a significant part of the talk. So, what’s better than hear and learn from other customers? We are really happy and proud to have with us on stage this year:

  • Marco Oberli, Product Owner Database and Automation, Postfinance AG, Switzerland
  • Moritz Werning, Team Leader Database, Swisscom, Switzerland
  • Fernando Simon, Oracle ACE Director, Luxembourg
  • Julian Dontcheff, Global Database Lead, Accenture Oy

Now it’s your turn to select the talks and labs you’d like to attend – and we all know, the choice won’t be an easy one with such a massive program and so many interesting talks in just a few short conference days.

Monday, Sept 18, 2023

This is the pre-conference day. And for our team it will be a packed working day already. We will deliver a Deep Dive Course, two labs on behalf of Oracle University. Each of them will span 4 hours, either from 9 am – 1 pm or from 2pm – 6 pm. So if you are up for another challenge rather than hanging out at the pool, you may want to check out these two offers. But be aware, there is extra costs associated with it. Those aren’t included in the regular conference setup.

Laptops will be provided, you won’t need to bring anything except a clear mind and your fingers to type since this will be a real hands-on lab with lots of extras from our side.

Tuesday, Sept 19, 2023

On Tuesday, this is the talk you may want to start the day with. Get up early, have some workout, skip the coffee which only looks like coffee and take fresh water instead – and at 8:30h we’ll shake you and wake you up with:

Sept 19, 2023 – 8:30 – 9:15 a.m.
Best Practices for Upgrade and Migration to Oracle Database 23c

With me on stage will be Daniel Overby Hansen and Marco Oberli from Postfinance AG, Switzerland. We have so much interesting content we’d like to share with you, and we still need to figure out how to fit it into 45 minutes. We’ll have demos – and some slides. And Marco will give you deep insights into how Postfinance adopted not only 19c but also went super agile with Multitenant within their development environment.

So this is the right session for you to start your conference experience with at DatabaseWorld at Oracle CloudWorld this year.

Then, before and after lunch it is time for Hands-On experience. Whereas I have good and bad news.

For the first lab,

Sept 19, 2023 – 11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
LAB: No Slide Zone – Database Patching Insights

you don’t need to bring anything except for your questions, ideas, complaints since Daniel, Rodrigo and myself will try to answer all your patching questions, whether it is database or Grid Infrastructure related, opatch, opatchauto, datapatch, patching runtime, backports, merges, whatever is in your mind.

No slides will be shown – but we have a electronic flip chart and environments where we can show and demonstrate lots of things. We’ll do this live, we’ll make this a fun session – and maybe you’ll take something with you easing your future patching experiences a bit. Watch Daniel’s teaser video – then you’ll join for sure 🙂

Unfortunately, our second lab seems to be sold out already.

Sept 19, 2023 – 1:30 – 3:00 p.m.
LAB: Upgrade and Migrate to Oracle Database 19c and 23c the easy way

As it looks like, our Upgrade lab may be sold out already. You can try to register to get to the waiting list. In any case, please bring your laptop to all labs except the No Slide Zone lab.

And to end the day with a relaxing nostalgic talk, you should register for

Sept 19, 2023 – 5:00 – 5:45 p.m.
Help! My database is still on Oracle 8i

That is a session for everybody who remembers what SRVMGRL is used for – and of course everybody who wants a bit of nostalgia paired with expert tips and tricks for older database. No names will be noted down. We won’t chase you. But in case you still use older systems before the 11.2.0.4 days, or when we approach 23c now, older than 19c, then this talk is made for you. Daniel and Rodrigo compiled an awesome story, and Julian Dontcheff will add some of his experience in the past years.

Trust me, this is the right talk to end your first full conference day before you head out into the afternoon meetings, dinners and get-togethers.

Wednesday, Sept 20, 2023

Now, it’s time to meet us at our Upgrade and Migration booth in the demogrounds. I will post a bigger picture separately as soon as I have the exact layout confirmed.

But again, after your morning workout, you can start the day with us at 8:30 a.m. already:

Sept 20, 2023 – 8:30 – 10:00 a.m.
LAB: Patch me if you can!

We compiled a brand new and exciting lab for everybody who want to experience the newest and smartest in database patching. You’ll do out-of-place and in-place patching to compare both techniques. You’ll deal with bundle and merge patches – and all of it in one command. Patching is boring? We’ll make it as entertaining as possible as you can see in Rodrigo’s teaser video – and be aware, this song is very hard to get out of your head.

Thursday, Sept 21, 2023

Thursday is a wild day. The conference day is shorter, some of you may check out and store luggage hopefully in shorter lines this year than last year. And we’ll have a packed day offering you another lab and three talks.

Roy and Bill will start our day together with an awesome story from Moritz Werning from Swisscom, Switzerland, about how he migrated core banking systems into PDBs with Data Pump. This is something you should definitely add to your schedule:

Sept 21, 2023 – 10:15 – 11:00 a.m.
Data Pump New Features 23c and Best Practices

And once you had a quick bite somewhere, you can play with such a migration using Data Pump, xTTS and PERL automation scripts in our Hands-On Lab an hour and a half later by yourself. Don’t be shy but bring your laptop:

Sept 21, 2023 – 12:30 – 2:00 p.m.
LAB: Data Pump cross platform migration – Tips and Tricks

Please hurry if you are interested as this lab is almost sold out. And I think it is the first time ever that you can experience and play with such an automated migration without our LiveLabs platform without any risk.

Two disadvantages when you signed up for this session: You may then not come to our cloud migration and patching talks.

In parallel with the lab, Rodrigo together with the product managers for ZDM and DMS, Ricardo Gonzalez and Alex Kotopoulis, will show you:

Sept 21, 2023 – 12:30 – 1:15 p.m.
Simplify your Migration of Oracle Databases to the Cloud

where Rodrigo will show and demonstrate our landmark tool, the Oracle Cloud Migration Advisor.

And Rodrigo has to hurry then since I will need him on stage for the conference closing talk:

Sept 21, 2023 – 1:45 – 2:30 p.m.
Patching Best Practices for the Oracle Database and Grid Infrastructure

Here we’ll have experienced Oracle ACE Director Fernando Simon with us on stage telling you about his real world experience and learning with patching large Multitenant environments in ExaCC systems.

You’ll see, this is a long list. And I will do some special compilation posts making it easier to join us in the coming two weeks, and during the conference.

We love to see you – honestly! For us, such a conference is hard work. But our reward is talking to you, discussing your topics – and having customers with us on stage.

CU soon in Las Vegas!

–Mike
