No worries, this isn’t a blog post from the vault. And I haven’t accidentally published something from the past just today. It is real. Oracle Database 12.2.0.1 and GI are certified on OL8 and RHEL8.

What has been certified?
Thanks to my colleagues and a large customer in the UK, I received an email asking whether I have seen this information already on MOS. I haven’t. I knew that there were discussions but I had no actual date for the 12.2.0.1 certification on OL8 on my radar.
So in brief, these Linux 8 releases have been certified for Oracle Database and Grid Infrastructure 12.2.0.1:
- Oracle Linux – OL 8 Update 2+
- Minimum kernel version:
Unbreakable Enterprise kernel: 5.4.17-2011.1.2.el8uek.x86_64 or Red Hat Compatible kernel: 4.18.0-193.19.1.el8_2.x86_64
- Minimum kernel version:
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux – RHEL 8 Update 2+
- Minimum kernel version:
4.18.0-193.19.1.el8_2.x86_64
- Minimum kernel version:

Hi Mike,
I tried creating a 12.2.0.1 (Oct 21) database on OL8u4. When I first ran dbca it failed with these messages at the end of the dbca trace file:
[main] [ 2021-12-14 12:06:49.027 GMT ] [ConfigUtil.getConfiguredValue:182] ==== Fallback to env var ‘CV_ASSUME_DISTID’=null
[main] [ 2021-12-14 12:06:49.027 GMT ] [VerificationUtil.getUniqueDistributionID:8803] Value not configured for CV_ASSUME_DISTID
INFO: Dec 14, 2021 12:06:49 PM oracle.install.commons.flow.AbstractFlowExecutor completeBackgroundOperations
INFO: Terminating all background operations
WARNING: Dec 14, 2021 12:06:49 PM oracle.install.commons.util.exception.AbstractErrorAdvisor getDetailedMessage
WARNING: [WARNING] [INS-08109] Unexpected error occurred while validating inputs at state ‘ConfigurationParams’.
CAUSE: No additional information available.
ACTION: Contact Oracle Support Services or refer to the software manual.
SUMMARY:

oracle.install.commons.flow.FlowException: [INS-08109] Unexpected error occurred while validating inputs at state ‘ConfigurationParams’.
So …. before running dbca I did this:
export CV_ASSUME_DISTID=OL7
The Oracle 12.2 release notes tell you to set it when installing 12.2 database on OL8 so I thought I’d give it a try.
Success! It did the trick – dbca ran successfully but only when the above was exported beforehand.
Hi Dave,
thanks for the hint – and you are right, this “universal” installation workaround is required.
I will add it to the blog post. Paul told me already that this certification is good news for you and reliefs some migration pressure.
Take care and hope we’ll be able to meet soon again!
Mike
Hi Mike,
are there any plans to certify Oracle Database 12.1.0.2 for SUSE Linux Enterprise 15 ? That would help us a lot in our migration plans.
If a certification is not planned as of yet, what would be the best way to address this topic?
Best regards,
George
Hi George,
I’m not aware of such plans. Maybe an SR will shed some light.
Thanks,
Mike
