My team mates are really quick. We received an information early this week about a missing or wrong DV check in the preupgrade – and they implemented it within a day or so. The September 2018 version of the improved preupgrade.jar for Oracle 12.2 and 18c is available for download.

Please find the new September versions of:
- Oracle 12.2.0.1 preupgrade.jar – build 17
- There’s issue with “creating directories” int he build 17 version – please use build 18 instead!

Can I run the preupgrade before installing the upgrade-to version binaries/ORACLE_HOME?
I have a 11.2.0.4 db and wanto to just check the output for a upgrate-to version 12.2. I don’t want the install the OH 12.2.
But the docs says:
Syntax:
$Earlier_release_Oracle_home/jdk/bin/java -jar $New_release_Oracle_home
/rdbms/admin/preupgrade.jar [FILE|TERMINAL] [TEXT|XML] [DIR output_dir]
Of course you can 🙂
You can store it in /home/oracle as well – doesn’t have to be in $ORACLE_HOME/rdbms/admin
