The first RU (Release Update) for Oracle 12.2.0.1 is available
What is an RU?
An RU is a Release Update. And there’s not much difference except for the name to an Proactive Bundle Patch.
In addition there are RURs: Release Update Revisions.
Those are very similar to Patch Set Updates containing less changes.
You may have read my previous blog posts from the past years: I strongly favor RUs (formerly known as Proactive Bundle Patches) over RURs (formerly known as PSUs) for many reasons:
Therefore I will – of course – highly recommend RUs. But there will be more posts in the next weeks about all the details of RUs and RURs and the potential changes. And Support is going to release a number of new notes with FAQs and other useful information about RUs and RURs.

PSUs and BPs for Oracle Database 12.1.0.2, SPUs and PSUs for Oracle Database 11.2.0.4
Of course on July 18, 2017, we released the PSUs and BPs for Oracle Database 12.1.0.2 and the SPUs and PSUs for Oracle Database 11.2.0.4 as well. See section 3.1.4.3 (for Oracle Database 12.1.0.2) and section 3.1.4.4 (for Oracle Database 11.2.0.4) in MOS Note: 2261562.1 – Patch Set Update and Critical Patch Update July 2017 Availability Document.
Stay tuned – I will now download the RU for Oracle Database 12.2.0.1 and apply it.

RU is for Russia. RUR is for Russian currency. Old names sound more neutral.
Like it 🙂
Just to be clear: as for now I have no positive emotions of such coincidence, because Russia invaded Ukraine, my country. But I do understand that others too far from us to feel the same, so ok, let it be 🙂
Andriy,
I see your point – and I didn’t know that you are from the Ukraine. I won’t comment politics but you may know how Germany’s position (and most Germans I know think the same) is in this conflict. So please don’t blame anybody for such a coincidence in naming.
All the best!!!
Mike
Mike,
You’re right, of course.
You may delete my comments for politic neutrality. Thanks for understanding.
Andriy.
Hi Mike,
With the new RU and RUR releases, it seems a note has been completely rewritten.
The M.O.S article Announcement: Oracle Recommended Patches — Oracle Database (756671.1) became Master Note for Database Proactive Patch Program (Doc ID 756671.1)
A bit strange to reuse the same ID for a different title.
Regards,
Nicolas
Nicolas,
I agree – and thanks for the hint. The note still lists “recommended” patches (meaning: the most recent ones) but format and content are a bit different than before. The good thing as the content goes into the same direction: this way (by not having a “new” note id) people get redirected to the new one. MOS unfortunately does not have a feature to redirect anything. If the old one would have been disappeared you’d be in nowhere.
Cheers
Mike
